    Los Angeles, CA 90012

Celebrate the 70th birthday of great American composer John Adams with a special performance of his most beloved opera choruses and one of his all-time favorite works that influenced him as a composer. Publisher Boosey & Hawkes approached Artistic Director Grant Gershon to curate a collection of soon-to-be-released piano transcriptions of his popular opera choruses. Each will be featured with a different, virtuosic pianist to accompany the full chorus.
After the homage, we roll out three additional pianos to the stage for one of Adams’ all-time favorite works: Stravinsky’s Les Noces (The Wedding). Four virtuosic pianists join guest soloists and the LA Master Chorale for Stravinsky’s raucous Russian peasant wedding, where young lovers are put through a series of unusual folk rituals before they finally say their “I do’s” amidst the drunken revelry. In 1997, Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna sent ripples throughout the choral world. Originally premiered by the LA Master Chorale, its influence on choral music and musicians has been felt far and wide, cementing its status as one of the most performed works of the late 20th century. This season, Lux Aeterna receives its first performance with orchestra at Walt Disney Concert Hall to commemorate this occasion.
One of Lux Aeterna’s biggest fans became a choral rock star in his own right: Eric Whitacre, who begins a two year residency with the LA Master Chorale with a newly commissioned work. And if this wasn’t enough, Artistic Director Grant Gershon has included iconic music from some of LA’s most influential composers including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Shawn Kirchner, and commissions of new works by Moira Smiley and Billy Childs.
