“Sharmila will begin her first season with Volti, a 20-voice vocal ensemble whose mission is to foster and showcase contemporary American music and composers. The ensemble will perform at the closing ceremonies of the SoundWave(5) Festival.“
It was a wonderfully clear day in the city. Our carpool arrived well before our call time, and right about when the festival folks began to set up. The concert was to be in the lovely marble courtyard at the entrance of the museum.
After much experimenting during our sound check, it was decided that we’d sing the Garrop “stage” right behind the pillars – men in back, women in front. That was the best configuration for sound. During the applause, we moved to center “stage” to sing the Crouch in front of Rodin’s “The Thinker.” The comedy of it was that the thinker had his back to the audience. I’d say that fits the festival tag line, “Innovative Art & Music,” but more so, as our Executive Director pointed out, this concert’s title, “The End of the Beginning.”
Except for the plane flying overhead during the last two beautiful bars of tenor solo, the concert went pretty well!
